Once Upon a Time in a Basement........and 8 Years later!

Sep 03, 2021 07:25AM ● By John Gales
Once upon a time in a basement, far, far away, an aspiring brewer toiled away at beer recipes and brewing processes.  Brewing into the wee hours of the night while still holding down a day job, Bryce Schaffter began to create his very first craft beers. The art of beer creation fueled his passion. Fast forward to 2013, when his wife gave him a swift nudge, Bryce left the basement at his house to start a professional brewery.

On September 27th, 2013, Cinder Block Brewery was born! Cinder Block was part of the first five breweries to open in the Kansas City area. They originally opened in North Kansas City as a small taproom with six year-round beers. The most popular among guests being the Block IPA, a true hop monster! North Kansas City is located just north of the Missouri River and downtown Kansas City area. At that time, it was a very industrial neighbor filled with warehousing, transportation, and manufacturing businesses.  A few months later down the road, Bryce’s interest and passion in experimenting led to the addition of hard ciders to their lineup.  Over the course of the next 8 years, both Cinder Block and the North Kansas City community would grow much larger than they expected!

In the end of summer in 2015 Cinder Block expanded and busted out the wall that connected them to the old car shop next door. After a lot of hard work and revamping, this old shop would become a new event space and a massive outdoor patio. With growing demand from Kansas Citians wanting to get beer without traveling to the taproom, Cinder Block also decided to begin to distribute their beer in the Kansas City, MO area that year. Guests could now find the Block IPA, Weathered Wit, Cherry Cider and other brews and ciders on tap at local bars and restaurants.

The fun didn’t stop there! In 2018 Cinder Block began sending draft beer out west to Kansas. You could now find Cinder Block beers as far west as Manhattan, KS. Growth continued with the release of six-packs into the Missouri market in December of 2019.  Things were rocking and rolling and were on the up and up and then March 2020 hit. The taproom, along with bars and restaurants in both Kansas and Missouri went through a mandated shut down with the surge of Covid-19. With the main outlets of their beer sales being closed, Cinder Block was forced to adapt.  They began to can all taproom exclusive beers for the first time and sold them to-go out front of their garage door.  The staff immediately adapted their roles to help pivot, including having one of the brewers deliver beer to folks in the surrounding area.  Seeing as they had only been sending draft beer to Kansas at this point. Cinder Block launched six-packs into the Kansas market as well.

With adaptability and a passion for craft beverages, Cinder Block has managed to prevail through the pandemic. This September marks the 8th Anniversary of their opening! To celebrate Cinder Block will be hosting a “Birthday Week” that runs from September 20-25th. There will be multiple beer and cider releases, live music, trivia, a special bottle release and MORE.  Cheers to 8 years!!
